Able Volunteer
This
Module
is
designed
to
give
you
the
knowledge
and
experience
that
you
will
require
to
support
the
coxswain,
and
should
it
be
necessary,
deal
with
an
emergency
and
get
the
craft
back
to
a
safe
haven.
Once
passed
as
Able
Volunteer
you
are
qualified
to
crew
a
craft,
support the coxswain and helm it under instruction.
You
are
expected
to
show
competency
in
the
modules
before
they
are
signed
off,
so
it
may
take
a
few
times
in
the
classroom
or
on
a
boat to gain a sufficient skill level.
There
is
no
time
scale
against
your
training
progression,
also
if
you feel the need for extra coaching it is available.
This
section
covers
more
specific
details
on
the
following
topics
which,
apart
from
details
on
life
jackets, hopefully will never be needed.
•
Man overboard
•
Summoning help (VHF)
•
Abandon ship
•
Fire
•

This
section
will
introduce
you
to
basic
navigation
skill
that
will
enable
you
to
know
about
and
us
nautical charts as well as the UK buoyage system.
All
sea
voyages
should
be
considered
hazardous
but
with
the
use
of
charts
any
dangers
can
be
foreseen
and
preparations
made
beforehand
to
eliminate
them.
Buoyage
recognition
will
be
vital
when
navigating
in
coastal waters and entering or leaving a port.
They
are
a
great
aid
in
navigation
as,
where
available,
‘buoy
hopping’
from
port
to
port
becomes
an easy way not to get lost!

The
International
Regulations
for
Preventing
Collisions
at
Sea
(IRPCS),
often
called
COLREGs,
are
critical
for
ensuring
safety
and order on the water.
These
rules
provide
a
universal
framework
for
understanding
vessel
hierarchy
&
signalling
intentions
and
avoiding
dangerous
situations,
making
them
essential
knowledge
for
anyone
operating a vessel.
Without
a
solid
understanding
of
the
IRPCS,
even
experienced
mariners
risk
miscommunication
and
potential
collisions.
